The Obstacle Is The Way

Ryan Holiday is a young marketing executive turned columnist, author and motivational speaker. His book The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph, which explores the ancient philosophical principal of finding success in any situation, has been translated into more than 20 languages and has sold more than 230,000 copies.

In his keynote, Holiday focuses on a principal first attributed to Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who said, "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." Holiday explains how to put this principal into practice by examining the success stories of historical icons such as John D. Rockefeller, Amelia Earhart and Steve Jobs — outliers whose accomplishments are due less to luck or skill than to an obstinate determination to see opportunity instead of opposition. Holiday boils this philosophy down into a simple formula for overcoming frustrations and turning adversity into advantage.

Holiday is a media strategy columnist for The New York Observer. His work has appeared in Forbes magazine, The Huffington Post, Fast Company and The Columbia Journalism Review. Holiday dropped out of college at the age of 19 to study under American writer and strategist Robert Greene. As the former director of marketing at American Apparel, his campaigns have been studied by YouTube, Twitter and Google. Holiday went on to advise a number of multi-platinum musicians and has since made a name for himself as a marketing, strategy and motivational speaker.

Holiday's works have been awarded honors such as Wall Street Journal bestseller and USA Today bestseller, among others. Forbes magazine called The Obstacle Is the Way "an inspiring read for anyone faced with adversity."
